Vision therapy

Vision therapy sessions

One therapist, one patient, about 45 minutes, in a room with the tools laid out. Sessions are training for the eyes, built from the evaluation and changed as you go.

Results vary. Some people notice a change in a few weeks, some take longer, and some notice little. Dr. Parrish rechecks the measurements at set visits and tells you what has and has not moved.

What we work on

  • Tracking

Following a target smoothly, and moving the eyes from one point to the next without losing the place.

  • Focusing

Changing focus between far and near, and holding it steady for a page or a screen.

  • Eye teaming

Aiming both eyes at the same point, especially up close, where reading and screens happen.

  • Eyes and hands

Matching what the eyes see to what the hands do, in drawing, building and ball games.

  • Visual memory

Holding a shape or a sequence in mind and finding it again, with cards and short tasks.

  • Stamina

Doing close work for longer, with breaks that suit the person.

How a plan runs

Every plan is set by the evaluation. This is the usual shape.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Evaluation

Measurements, a written plan and an estimate of how often to come.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Weekly sessions

One-on-one with a therapy assistant, with a short routine to practice at home.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Progress visits

Dr. Parrish repeats the key measurements and changes the plan.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Wrap-up

A final check, a short routine to keep, and a note for your child's school or your doctor if you ask.

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

Vision therapy sessions are not a routine vision plan benefit. Some medical plans pay part of them, depending on the diagnosis and the plan. We check your benefits before you start, and we give you a written estimate if you pay yourself.

    How fees work
  • What to bring

    • Current glasses and contact lenses

    • Vision and medical insurance cards

    • A list of any eye drops or medicines you or your child use

    • Last year's report card or a note from school, if reading is the concern

About sessions

Can a parent stay in the room?

Yes, for a child's first sessions and whenever you would like. Some children settle faster with a parent nearby, and some work better with the door closed. We follow your child.

What if my child does not like it?

Tell your therapist. The tasks can change, and the plan can slow down. Training only works if the person is willing to do it.

Do you work with my child's school?

If you ask, we send a short note on what we measured and what we are working on. We do not tell the school how to teach.

Start with an evaluation

Sessions begin after an evaluation. Choose a time online, or call and we will find one.
